Here is a troop reciting the Girl Scout Promise using ASL…

In this inspiring video, a troop of Girl Scouts showcases their commitment to inclusivity and diversity by reciting the Girl Scout Promise using American Sign Language (ASL). By embracing ASL, they not only demonstrate their dedication to unity and communication, but also their eagerness to ensure that every girl feels valued and included in the Girl Scout community. Their efforts serve as a powerful reminder that true patriotism lies in celebrating and embracing the unique qualities of our diverse communities.

Touch and Feel Activity

Find things that have different textures and create a “feel wheel”-cut a big circle out of poster board and divide into eight pie slices in each slice glue something that has a different texture like smooth, rough, sticky, bumpy, hard, squishy, or hairy. Then have girls take there wheel to another person in troop have them close there eyes and guess what each item is.

Try Braille

When someone is missing their sense of sight, they can still "read" using their sense of touch through a special system known as Braille. Let's use the Braille alphabet to figure out how to write your name in this tactile language. Once you have your name in Braille, you can create a unique and personalized tactile experience by writing it with dots of glue. As the glue dries, you will be able to feel your name in Braille, allowing you to connect with this beautiful form of communication and gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of those who rely on touch for reading and communication.

Read About Your Senses

Now that your girls have explored the concept of the five senses, I highly recommend the book "Look, Listen, Taste, Touch, and Smell: Learning About Your Five Senses" by Pamela Hill Nettleton. This engaging and informative read delves into the intricacies of how our senses work in specific situations. Not only is it a fantastic resource for your girls, but as leaders, we can also benefit from reading it and expanding our knowledge. With its engaging approach, this book is far from boring, and I guarantee that both you and your troop will learn a thing or two about the fascinating world of our senses. Make sure to grab your copy and embark on this exciting learning journey together.

What do we do after your girls complete the activities?

Well of course give them the badge to display proudly on their vest, they earned it! Additionally If you are like many leaders we want to award our girls when they complete something even beyond just the patch. One great way to show achievement is with a certificate. Don’t worry you don’t have to make them, I found a resource that has done all the work for you and all you have to do is print them and customize the certificates with each girl’s name, badge or award earned, date, and troop leader.

Editable certificates perfect for awarding girls after earning a badge.

If you don’t want to spend the time planning, our Activity Booklet has step-by-step instructions with activities that don’t require any planning other than gathering supplies and printing booklets.

Enjoy every minute being a leader and continue to inspire your girls!
